Baseball Hall of Fame 2014: The Pinstripe Alley Ballot

The Pinstripe Alley writers threw their hats into the Hall of Fame voting arena and cast their ballots just in time before the official announcement is made on Wednesday, January 8. We tried to make it as authentic as possible; voters could elect up to ten players into the Hall. As is the rules for the real voting process, any players named on 75% of the ballots would be elected in and anyone who fell below 5% would drop off the ballot for next year. We had 17 writers weigh in, and because of the limited sample size we have, anyone with 13 or more votes would be elected and anyone who didn't get a vote would be booted off.

So who made it in if the voting was up to us?

In the end we received 164 votes in total, with only Caitlin, Michael and Scott deciding to vote for fewer than ten players. According to our criteria, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Mike Mussina, Mike Piazza, and Frank Thomas all made it into the Hall of Fame in 2014, with Maddux being the only unanimous selection.

A total of 17 players received no votes, pushing them off the ballot for 2015 and sealing the fate of Jack Morris' Hall of Fame case in his 15th season on the ballot. Don Mattingly and Alan Trammell, both of whom might not last another season, each received at least a single vote to keep them on.

According to our calculations, next year's Hall of Fame ballot would consist of Jeff Kent, Edgar Martinez, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Tim Raines, Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, Alan Trammell, and Larry Walker, and would be joined by first timers Randy Johnson, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, and Gary Sheffield.

So what do you think, faithful Pinstripe Alley readers? Who would you vote for? Have at it, and be civil!
