Infielder Chris Nelson will return to the Reds organization on a minor league deal.
The Cincinnati Reds have signed 28-year-old infielder Chris Nelson to a minor league deal, the team has announced. Nelson, who originally signed a minor league deal with Cincinnati in January, previously opted out of his deal on March 29th, effectively making him a free agent again. As part of the new contract, Nelson has the option to opt out of his deal on May 6th, as first reported by our own Chris Cotillo. He will be assigned to Triple-A Louisville to start the season.
The 9th overall pick in the 2004 draft by the Colorado Rockies, Nelson has enjoyed limited success at the big league level, including a .301/.352/.458, 105 OPS+ 2012 season, the only year he has received more than 250 plate appearances. A career .268/.312/.399 hitter, Nelson spent his first three seasons in Colorado before moving to the Yankees, and later the Angels, last season. The Angels granted his free agency in December.
Nelson performed well in Spring Training for the Reds this year, hitting .317/.348/.463 in 46 plate appearances.
