The outfielder returns to the Yankees, according to a source.
The Yankees and outfielder Chris Young have reached agreement on a one-year deal, according to a major-league source. The deal, which is pending a physical, was first reported by Sweeny Murti of WFAN, and includes no team or player options for 2016.
Young, 31, hit .282/.354/.521 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 23 games with the Yankees in September after signing a minor league deal with the club at the end of August. He was released by the Mets after hitting .205/.283/.346 in 88 games to start the season, but impressed the Yankees with his performance in September and was rewarded with a new major-league deal.
Young projects as a fourth outfielder for the Yankees, behind Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran. The team has limited outfield depth in the wake of the departure of Ichiro Suzuki, so re-upping Young makes sense.
In nine major league seasons with the Diamondbacks (2006-2012), Athletics (2013), Mets (2014) and Yankees (2014), Young is a lifetime .234/.313/.427 hitter with 155 home runs and 486 RBI. He is capable of playing all three outfield positions.
